Student of the Week
Kyle

Reading/Language Arts
The children have done a great job collecting information about their animal.  We have shared a lot of facts about the hippo and the tortoise with our friends. Next week we will write our reports and use the Fab 5 Writing Checklist to edit our work.
We will be reading Tarra and Bella, The Elephant and Dog Who Became Best Friends, by Carol Buckley.  Tarra came to live at the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee after retiring from the circus.  Tarra remained alone until she met a stray dog, named Bella.  The two became inseparable.
Vocabulary:  inseparable, threatened, recoving, pasture, reunited, caregiver, incredibly
Focus:  determine meaning of words, compare and contrast important points in the two stories Owen & Mzee and Tarra and Bella

Math
We will be writing 3-digit numbers in expanded and standard form and applying place value concepts to find equivalent representations of numbers.  We will be working on identifying 10 more & 10 less, and 100 more & 100 less than a given number.

Social Studies
We will focus on using context and picture clues to develop meaning of words.  We will use the problem solving process:  name the problem, find out more about the problem, list possible solutions to the problem, talk about the best way to solve the problem, and solve the problem.
