Reading
We will continue with our Close-Reading of informational text. Students will be text marking unfamiliar words, important details, connections, and key words. We will also be reading Owen & Mzee by Issabella Hatkoff, Craig Hatkoff, and Dr. Paula Kahumbu. This is a true story of two great friends: a baby hippo named Owen and a 120-year-old giant tortoise named Mzee. A frightened young hippo separated from his family by the devastating tsunami in southeast Asia, adopted an ancient Aldabra tortoise as his "mother." They are now inseparable.
Math
Students learned some subtraction strategies: counting back, using fact families, making ten, and using addition to subtract. Next week we begin Place Value to 100, We will be grouping objects into tens and ones to show 2-digit numbers and comparing 2-digit numbers using the symbols <, >, and =.
Science
We will learn about the "Others" food group. Foods from this group don't belong in the "Five Food Group," because they do not help the body to grow and stay healthy. We will review the importance of eating foods from the five food groups, exercising and resting to help us stay healthy and strong. There will be a test next week.
