March 19, 2012

Spring Break begins March 26th.
Please help your child find a book that they will enjoy reading. They will be expected to record the minutes and the books.

Reading/Language Arts
We will be reading Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, as an example of a personal narrative.
Reading Writing Workshop: Focus on Writing Traits: Personal Narrative
The workshop for this theme focuses on the traits of voice, conventions, and presentation. Students will write about an experience that matters to them. They will focus on details that will interest their audience and choose words and phrases that show clearly how they feel. Their narratives will include a beginning, middle and end with details to help the reader picture what has happened.

Math
There will be a test on Chapter 17, Perimeter and Area. We will begin Chapter 18, Weight, Mass, Capacity and Temperature. Students will be measuring in pounds, ounces, grams and kilograms.

Science
We will be observing how objects decompose. Students will learn about the causes and effects of pollution and identify ways that resources are wasted.

Social Studies
We will begin Unit 5, Our Country Long Ago. The vocabulary words are: shelter, tradition, explorer, colony, colonist, independence and pioneer.
