August 25, 2017

Welcome
I would like to welcome everyone to the 2017-2018 school year.  I was happy to meet many of the parents at our school Open House and I look forward to another opportunity to meet with you for our Second Grade Curriculum Night on September 7th.
The children have done an awesome job this week learning many of our school's expectations.  We finished off the week with a special treat of popsicles under the trees.

Reading/Language Arts
The children have read a book and taken a quiz using the Scholastic Reading Counts Program to earn points.  They will continue to read good fit books.  Each month we will graph the number of points earned.
Next week I will begin to work with each of the students to find the level of instruction for guided reading to best meet their needs.

Math
Today the children completed a one-minute timed test to see how fast they could write.  Your child's goal for time-tests is based on the number completed.  The purpose of time test is to build fluency of math facts.
Next week we will read a story about animals to solve math problems and learn some fun facts about how animals care for their young.  The math strategies we will focus on will be doubles and making ten to find sums.

Science
We will begin with our unit on nutrition. The children will meet the Royal Family and learn how they help "Little D" the dragon make healthy choices.

Homework
Science - bring in small pictures of foods (ex. sale papers from food stores)
