Welcome Back!

I've enjoyed meeting everyone at the Open House.  It was exciting seeing new faces and great seeing some familiar faces.

Student of the Week
           Sam

Snack Time
We will have a snack time in the morning.  I would like to encourage children the bring a healthy snack from home.  In science we will be learning  that in order to grow up healthy we need foods from the Five Food Groups.

Last Week we had fun learning about our new classmates as we shared our All About Me Bag and we did a People Search to make new friends.

This Week students will be given the AIMSweb Math Benchmarking Assessment, the M-Comp and the M-Cap and the AIMSweb Reading Benchmarking Assessment.  These tests will help us to meet your child's academic needs.

Reading/LA
We will begin the Daily Five.  Students will be selecting good fit books and reading to someone and reading to self.  They have been introduced to the Scholastic Reading Counts Program and will be able to earn points for completing quizzes on the books read.  We will begin working on Word Work by practicing spelling sorts.

Math
This year we will be using a new math program, enVisionMath.  Our first topic is Understanding Addition and Subtraction.  A Home-School Connection letter will be sent home with suggested books to read and a home activity.

Science
We will begin our unit on nutrition with Little "D".  Little "D" is a dragon that feels terrible because he has not been eating foods from the Five Food Groups.  The Royal Family comes to his rescue and teach him about the importance of eating healthy.

Social Studies
We will begin Unit 1, Places Where We Live.  This unit introduces children to the different places in which people live and describes the characteristics of each of these different places.
The vocabulary words for this unit include:  law, vote, community, history, urban, suburb, rural, and capital.
