September 2, 2013
It's that time of year again.
The students are doing a great job learning the new routines of second grade.  We have been organizing our materials for the busy year ahead.

Assessments
The students will be taking the following assessments this week:  MAPS, AIMS Web, and a spelling inventory.  These assessments will help us to meet the needs of the students to ensure academic growth.

Parents Are Invited to Curriculum Night - September 5th at 6:30.  I am looking forward to seeing everyone again.

Reading
Last week we worked on selecting the right fit book to read.  Each student went shopping to make their book selections.  We talked about their purpose, their interest, and the five finger rule for selecting the books.  This week we will talk about the different ways to read a book: read the pictures, read the words, and retell the story.  We will also be working on building stamina, to read independently for a longer period of time.

Math
We will be working on strategies for addition: counting on, doubles, near doubles, and making ten.

Science
We will begin our adventures with "Little D".  Little D is a sick dragon.  The Royal Family will help him learn about the five food groups and physical activity.  Will Little D learn to become a healthy little dragon?

Social Studies
Our first unit is Where We Live, the vocabulary words are:  law, vote, community, history, urban, suburb, rural, and capital.
