Parents
I would like to thank you for sending me such wonderful children.  They have done a great job this first week of school.  It seems that there is so much to remember as we settle into our classroom routine.  As I look around I see everyone getting along and helping one another.

Websites
You should have received a letter explaining the XtraMath program (to practice math facts) with a password. We will be using this website in school.  Your child can use this program where there is internet service, the link is:   www.xtramath.org/home.  You can use my school email address to log in  :janschultz@ccsd66.org.  There will be a letter going home this week about Raz- Kids (a program to help children improve reading skills, the link is: http://www.raz-kids.com

Reading
Theme: Silly Stories
Genre: Fantasy
The story for this week is A Dragon Gets By.  When Dragon decides that it's time to go shopping, a trip to the food store becomes an adventure.

Math
Students will be using patterns and strategies to recall sums to complete function tables.  We will use addition strategies to find sums of 3 addends.  

Science
We will begin with a unit on nutrition.  I like to encourage children to bring in a fresh fruit or vegetable for snack as we learn about the importance of the different food groups.

Social Studies
We will begin with Unit 1, Where We Live. Children will learn to obtain information from picture clues to define the vocabulary words for this unit:  law, vote, community, history, urban, suburb, rural, capital.  

Homework
Reading - read 20 minutes and complete Reading Log
Math - worksheet and practice math facts- Please check your child's Take Home Folder.  They need to practice the highlighted facts.
